Build Your Homemaker Resume

Ladies,
Today let’s build our homemaking resume. This is not to be seen by anyone else but as a practice to reflect on the state of your skills and mindset about homemaking.
The wisest of women builds her house,
Proverbs 14:1
but folly with her own hands tears it down.

Build Your House
Without homemaking skills, your household and family will languish in a state of neglect. It is outlined very clearly in scripture that the way we behave, speak and caretake is how we build our home.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
Proverbs 31:11-12
and he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good, and not harm,
all the days of her life..
A trustworthy woman
Do you follow through with what you say you will do? Can you be trusted to complete tasks? Do you keep private matters between you and your husband and not broadcast it to friends as “girl talk”? A company would not want to hire someone who did not behave in a way that exemplifies trust to the company. What examples can you think of to list on a homemaking resume that reflect your trustworthiness?
Proverbs 31:13
One thing that surprised me as a wife was how much research I needed to do to buy the correct things for our household. From food ingredients to household cleaners, to vacuums, to clothing. Not to mention the work we must do with the products. We must actually clean the house, cook the meals and use these tools we have procured to do the job.

If you are single, unwed, a newlywed, or a long-time wife, do you practice grocery list making, meal planning, budgeting, daily tidying, laundry, making your bed, doing dishes, keeping a bathroom clean? List the things on your homemaking resume that you do to “seek your wool and flax and work with willing hands”. If you cannot list anything, make a note of the things you need to skill build in to “fill out your resume”.
She is like the ships of the merchant;
Proverbs 31:14
she brings her food from afar.
This is a food service job.
Do you garden or raise animals for food? Do you stock up at Costco? Do you clip coupons? Do you only shop organic? What does being like a “ship of the merchant bringing food from afar” look like for you? This may change drastically in different seasons of life. List on your resume how you best do this now in your current season of life or write your dream scenario to go toward that goal.
She rises while it is yet night
Proverbs 31:15
and provides food for her household
and portions for her maidens.
Another way to look at this is, what to do behind the scenes that helps other people do their role in the household.
Example, you can make your husband coffee in the morning so that he doesn’t have to take the time to do it. You can prep food and have sandwiches, baked goods, etc. ready so that people can just grab something when hungry. There are many ways that we help others succeed and help the day run smoothly by simply doing some things behind the scenes for them! Yes, it is a selfless and loving task!
She considers a field and buys it;
Proverbs 31:16
with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
Invest wisely.
She saw an opportunity, consider it, and invested in it. How would you showcase on a resume what you do to invest wisely?
Proverbs 31:17
Buckle up.
The Hebrew note for “dresses herself with strength” is “she girds her loins”. “Girding” is like getting into a ready stance. We need to be ready to be strong because there will be challenges. It takes girding to discipline yourself to be physically and mentally strong to be loving and patient, a helpmate to a husband, a nurturer to children, fix things, organize, tidy, clean, plan, etc. We need to be strong inwardly and outwardly to serve our families. What does your resume say about how you gird your loins to be strong? Example: Do you read scripture daily, pray for God’s wisdom and help, talk with wise women in the church for help and support, and make healthy choices for physical ability? List what you do on your resume to “make yourself strong” for this work.
Proverbs 31:18-19
We do not need to make a huge income to still make some income.
Where do you “perceive that your merchandise is profitable”? This does not mean working for someone else in a 40 hour a week workforce job to earn a profit. How could you “put your hand to the distaff”?
She makes linen garments and sells them;
Proverbs 31:24
she delivers sashes to the merchant.
Enterprise, baby!
Earning money can be a fun and even fulfilling way to serve your family as it gives you something to do other than your housework, gives you a financial reward, an ability to invest money, and strengthens your skillset in that area. We need to do this in a way that is healthy for the family, not detracts from their well-being. There are many jobs that allow for flexibility. What would your homemaking resume say about your money earning ability?
She opens her hand to the poor
Proverbs 31:20
and reaches out her hands to the needy.
Notice the need around you
When you donate items, shop for a food bank, give to a family in need at church, you are “opening your hand to the poor”. Is this a regular concern of yours? How does your homemaking resume reflect this in your life?
She is not afraid of snow for her household,
Proverbs 31:21
for all her household are clothed in scarlet.
The Hebrew “clothed in scarlet” could also mean “in double thickness”. Both the color scarlet and double thickness indicate high quality garments.
The way we clothe our family is much like feeding them, it gives them something necessary and also enriching. What would your homemaking resume say about your knowledge on the topic of clothing your family? Do you understand fabrics for different seasons? Do you know the best brands for what kinds of items? Do you know how to get deals? Do you know how to dress yourself and your family in a respectful (modest) and nice way?
She makes bed coverings for herself;
Proverbs 31:22
her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Prioritize nice things
This is a way that we bless our husbands, our family, our guests, and our surrounding society. This is a way we communicate graceful things and offer comfort to the senses. This is why we are in awe at beautiful vacation destinations, weddings, and other highly esteemed places and events. What does your resume say about how your home looks and how you present yourself during the day?
Strength and dignity are her clothing,
Proverbs 31:25
and she laughs at the time to come.
Your A.O.R. & Trusting God
We are not in charge of the rain, or the crops, or natural disasters, or layoffs at jobs. But we are in control of a lot of what this passage talks about: our behavior, our words, our management of our household, our enterprising, our investing, and our faith. Simply put, we are supposed to respect our Area of Responsibility while ultimately trusting God.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,
Proverbs 31:26
and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
Be kind
No one wants to work with someone who isn’t pleasant to be around. What would your homemaking resume say about you?
No matter where you are in your homemaking skill set right now, consider your strengths and weaknesses so that you can continue to thrive and grow.
Companies often have high expectations for women going into a job. Companies expect women to be trained and professional in their occupation. Women likewise have a right for their company to have a high standard. Our home and our family is prioritized as such in scripture. Homemaking wives are meant to have a high level of competency as we see in The Holy Bible. The Proverbs 31 wife shows us an intelligent, dynamic, enterprising, caretaker who is dignified, wise, and strong. Her resume gives us the best template for what and how to prioritize this work given to us.
Happy homemaking today!
