Ladies,

As we are instructed to do in the Holy Bible, women are to be “working at home”. Among many verses teaching us this vital role that has often gone unattended for work outside of the home. Let’s revisit some essential groundwork for working in our homes today in the topic of what to keep in stock that is absolutely essential for health.

The Wife Manager

Since your husband will be gone all day earning money, it is our job to manage what he does not have time to do. One of those things is keeping our homes stocked with essentials. This means stocking our homes with food, medical supplies, tools, bedding, clothing, emergency supplies, etc. Think of how a manager of a store needs to be the premier specialist in knowing how fast the store sells out of what products to know how much to reorder and keep in stock. This is a job of the homemaking wife. One of our primary duties is to have a solid calculation on what gets used and how fast and to keep it in stock.

Do You Have These Essentials for Health in Stock?

Since this one is the most prominent and most likely to affect our daily lives, we must keep certain items on hand for our health and our family’s health. Think through the medications you need when something hits you. Think through preventative supplements that you need to keep from getting sick, or to fight something off at the first signs of it. Think of wound care or basic infection care or prevention. These are the things you should always have in the house. These items should be arranged neatly in a safe place, you should know where they are, and they should be within the expiration dates.

Stock: Essentials for Pain Management

Here are some items that manage pain and illness to have on hand at all times:

Electric heating pad

This is a very good pain reliever for menstrual cramps as well as other kinds of strains and pains that could occur to anyone.

Ice for Icing Injuries

Have the ice in a plastic bag ready to go. Label it “to ice injuries” or just keep a small bag of frozen peas on hand. You could even label that bag of peas for injuries. The size of frozen peas is perfect for molding around the body and maintaining a good icing effect. Larger frozen vegetables just do not have the same comfort and effectiveness at staying on the injury area. You could purchase frozen gel packs, but I do not recommend it as they can appear to be like food to a child or to a pet, and when consumed it is highly poisonous and can and will kill the one who eats it. I recommend keeping bagged ice or frozen peas for injuries.

Aspirin

Nature’s miracle drug, aspirin is a natural, anti-inflammatory pain medicine that works wonders as long as you know you can safely take it. It was once the go-to for lowering fevers, reducing pain and inflammation, but doctors do not make any money prescribing this effective and over the counter cheap as chips medicine.

Another go-to pain medication

It might be Aleve, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, but keep at least one of these strong standards on hand that is effective for you. You may need to give pain medicine to someone who cannot take aspirin, or you may just need something stronger. It is a good idea to have multiple kinds of pain medicines at home, and it is also a good idea to carry some with you in your purse wherever you go.

Antihistamines & Decongestants

Whether it is a sudden allergic reaction to something, seasonal allergies, or just a stuffy nose from a cold virus, having a good antihistamine and a decongestant on hand will change the game! We all get slapped with something serious from time to time. I keep my favorites on hand at all times and that has come in handier than you would even think! We survived many an illness just off of our home medicine cabinet and early intervention with the proper medicines. These things often kept us from getting worse and needing to pay for a doctor visit. But it also kept us from hurried runs to the drug store and being completely unprepared when you can’t function well due to illness. Have what you need so that you can just stay home if you are sick. It has been surprising how many times someone visiting or even a neighbor has needed to use medicines like this that thank God, we had on hand.

Real Unprocessed Salt

Salt water is a natural and highly effective mouth wash for tooth or gum inflammation & pain. Salt water can also be effective wound care for the skin. It is essential to consume enough of real salt in water to re-hydrate in a state of losing bodily fluids through illness – salt is absolutely essential when sick. The first thing the hospital does when you go in for any serious treatment, illness, or surgery is to give you a saline drip, which is salt water! Keep a large amount of good quality, natural, unprocessed salt in the home. Salt is so essential and so valuable people use to get paid in salt hence the old adage “he’s worth his salt” or “he’s not worth his salt”.

Baking Soda

A sour stomach can be quickly resolved with a teaspoon or a half teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water. Baking soda water relieves heartburn, ulcer pain, can help relieve bloating and gas, and is a tonic for a sore throat, and a good preventative of illness in general. You can bathe in appropriately proportioned baking soda water to soften skin and clean yourself effectively. Baking soda and water paste applied to the skin will calm and help heal poison ivy rash and itching. Brush your teeth with baking soda and water for whiter teeth and a clean mouth. Baking soda is also an effective household cleaner. We also need it for our baked goods! There are so many reasons to have a good stock of baking soda, this should be something every woman has on hand.

Activated Charcoal

Charcoal pills are taken to help the body de-tox from something harmful. Whether helping your organs detox from heavy metals, or from something bad that you ate, this can be an absolute essential to have for helping your body rid of any toxin as charcoal binds to harmful properties and helps escort it out of the body. As always, use with the knowledge of how to safely consume it.

Hydrogen Peroxide

There are so many uses for hydrogen peroxide if would take too long to list. But most of us grew up dousing some on our wounds because it is very effective at bringing debris out of wounds by bubbling grit to the surface and also disinfecting it. It is an effective mouth wash when diluted properly and also has benefits for the teeth. Soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide for ten minutes to kill the nasty bacteria that is present on toothbrushes.

Rubbing Alcohol

This is an incredibly caustic liquid that must be handled very carefully. But when it is properly used it is a highly effective disinfectant for both wounds and hard surfaces such as keyboards. But this will remove the finish and color off of some surfaces it is so strong, so be sure whatever you clean can take it. But it is an important item to have for wound care. You can buy rubbing alcohol wipes that are individually wrapped for a safer and less potentially hazardous way to use this product.

Bandages

Have a variety of bandages in different sizes. From small ones for finger injuries to larger ones for a big gash, to gauze wraps for wrapping a limb and stopping bleeding. All of these should be ready to go in your first aid kit.

Storage for Everything

The most important thing to know other than to have these items in stock is to keep them in a safe location away from small children and pets. Never store these items in low cabinets where it is easily accessible. But keep them handy enough so that you can use them when needed. Bins are a good idea to keep things organized.

The Health Preparedness Basics

I use these items so often that it is easy to forget that someone else may not even know to own them. Many of these items are the difference between getting better or getting worse. These items will keep your family safer and healthier for having them and knowing how to use them properly. Get in the habit of keeping these health stocks, checking their expiration dates and re-purchasing when low or expired. Anticipate needs and have these essentials at home already. You never know how much better a circumstance will be because you were prepared!

Happy homemaking
